Julia Fox‘s latest eclectic ensemble includes a pair of ultra-rare Oakley frames. The author and actress combined futurism with athleisure on Tuesday, stepping out in New York wearing an Puma x Ottolinger tie print top with a metallic Diesel cardigan and baggy basketball shorts.
Oakley’s Over the Top sunglasses were initially released in 2000, with Trinidadian runner Ato Boldon debuting them during the men’s 4×100 meter relay semifinals at the Sydney Olympics. At those Games, Boldon took home one silver medal and one bronze for the 100 and 200 meter races, respectively.

In 2020, the eyewear brand rereleased the Over the Top in a limited-edition metallic shade. The 20th anniversary of their launch coincided with the Tokyo Olympics, though they were ultimately postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Precious Mettle Over the Top shades nodded to the Games, featuring gradient hues of gold, silver and bronze.
“Twenty years later, I still remember the rush,” Boldon said in a press release at the time. “Wearing the Oakley Over the Top in Sydney was an iconic moment in my career.”
Originally retailing for $2,000, only 20 pairs of the Precious Mettle model were made. They’re now worth between $5,000 and $7,000 on the resale market, with original Over the Top iterations costing upward of $2,000 on eBay, 1stDibs and other sites.
According to Brian Takumi, vice president of product creative at Oakley, the Over the Tops were engineered specifically for track and field athletes.
“When creating new products, our goal is to find a solution to a problem our athletes are facing,” he said in a statement in 2020. “The Over the Top was born with the purpose of minimizing pressure points and reducing bounce created by force.…We knew the design was very unique, but we never expected all the attention we received from around the world — the product truly created a global moment.”
Oakley’s Over the Top design was also featured in the 2001 film “Spy Kids,” and they’ve also been worn by Flavor Flav, who sported the space age frames in 2003.
